The Sacred Blood Ritual

The Sacred Blood Ritual

Sacred Blood ritual Blog Post

A few days before the full moon, I performed a moon ritual which entailed the catching of my sacred cycle. And every time I had to clean my Jade Sea Sponge, I would wring the blood soaked sponge out and into what I call; “my menstrual offering bottle.” I’d then clean any access blood from around the outside of the bottle, close the lid on it tightly, and then sit it on my altar after saying my sacred prayer. I would also light a single white candle before I said the prayer. Then I’d place the menstrual offering bottle on my altar, until it was time to release more blood from my sacred sea sponge again. But before I sat the bottle down on the altar, while holding it in the palm of my hands, I would say;

“This is my blood, the blood from my body. A sacred part of me that I give to you, my spirit guides, ancestors, and most high. This is my offering. An offering of the honor, appreciation, and love I have for you. Except my blood as an offering of thanks and unconditional love.”  I’d then seal the bottle with a kiss or simply ring a bell before I placed it back on the altar.

Now some may wonder why I delve into something so deep when it comes to giving period blood as an offering instead of food or water. Some of you may even wonder, is it even sanitary? And it might even sound unorthodox or just plain disgusting to some. But if you study your history. I mean truly study it, you’ll see how disconnected we’ve been. From mother-earth to our wombs, we have been programmed to just pick up our pads and tampons in aisle nine, and call it a day. But in many cultures, there is a ceremony that actually takes place during a woman’s cycle. They celebrate by having a few days of worship, honor, and relaxation. They perform rituals, and let their menstrual blood become one with the earth.  But for us, having a period is an experience we’d rather not have. We complain about it, work our 9 to 5 jobs through it, and hide it from others as if it’s our dirty little secret. But for other cultures, it’s an honor to have, because having your cycle is sacred.

In fact, in the Native American Tradition, it is believed that physically and spiritually women are at their most powerful when their menstruating. And this is when we’re most creative. When I performed this ritual a few days ago, I could feel the energetic elevation. And I was so in-tuned and connected with my womb. Not to mention, my intuitive state of consciousness was at full throttle. In addition, it was the day before the full moon. So it was only fitting to pour the cells and powerful energy that is carried through my blood, into the earth. And giving thanks as I did it. This small simple imageritual was finalized around 2:00 in the morning. It was raining and chilly out. But I eased my front door opened, so not to wake my family, and I walked out to my front yard barefooted. The soft soggy mud was oozing between my toes as I made my way to the big tree in my front yard. And as I always do after I collect my blood, with my blood offering bottle cuffed in the palm of my hands, I stood in stillness. And with my eyes closed in front of the big tree, I said; “This is my blood, the blood from my body. A sacred part of me that I give to you, mother earth, my spirit guides, ancestors, and most high. This is my offering. An offering of the honor, appreciation, and love I have for you. Except my blood as an offering of thanks and unconditional love.”  I then poured my blood offering bottle into the ground, dropped a dime down, and whisper; “thank you.” And then I headed back to my home. As I share this, I can’t describe how powerful and profound it felt. But I can tell you that there was a glide in my walk, a pep in my step, and feeling of a new.

In the book,  Her Blood is Gold, the author writes; “To menstruate means to live through a monthly cyclical transmutation in which the past is shed and the new is embraced.” We have got to honor our cycle, and reconnect with that in which makes us more powerful, more stronger, and more spiritually connected.

Some of you may have your cycles close to or on the full moon. This is when she is  most powerful. And with your energy being elevated during your cycle, and the moon being most potent, there is no reason why we shouldn’t take advantage in tapping into that kind of energy and power. What we should NOT be, is as disconnected as we are. When the full moon is filled with this much energetic power, it is when it is the best time to harvest, create, and align yourself with the energy of the universe. And also taking full advantage of tapping into the energy of the full moon! The power is within you Queen. It is your divine birth right. So embrace it, love it, and own it. Goddess Blessings to you.
